ABOVE WE HAVE some major destination snow reports and some affordable hidden gems you maybe never heard of worth putting on your itinerary. USE THESE RESOURCES TO PLAN YOUR NEXT VACATION OR WEEKEND GETAWAY AND find the best snow, avoid the crowds, and maximize your fun RIDING ON tETON pOWDA wAXES. Here are some reasons to consider a smaller hidden gem ski resort:
hidden snow quality
Some major destination resorts in the PNW are still charging $223+ for a single day lift ticket, while struggling even in January 2024 with fishing ponds forming at the chair lift and muddy, exposed rock/stump filled ski runs. Meanwhile, other hidden gems like Pomerelle, in Idaho, are actually known for the state's largest annual snow fall each year, often exceeding 300-400 inches. And at 243" so far this season and a 58" base, its no surprise they have more snow currently than many of the major destination ski resorts across the country, best only by a few resorts like Alta (UT). And at $50 for a lift ticket and children under 6 ski & snowobard for free, we tip our hats to Pomerelle and other small resorts like them.
PET, family & beginner friendly
We love big ski resorts! We love the atmosphere, the granduer, the epic terrain and the big lodges & dining. But every resort has it's own vibe and price tag. We've enjoyed unexpected meetups with resort managers in the parking lots while both our dogs played together and were complimented and welcomed by the resort staff. Others like Snowbasin actually have life saving Avalanche SAR Dogs on staff who are worthy of rock star status. Growing up, I remember the St. Bernard Ambassador dog who used to roam Timberline Lodge with a barrel of hot chocolate around his neck to serve the children making warm memories.
far less crowded better value
When we see lift lines hundreds of yards long, maybe even a quarter mile at some resorts, we can't help but feel you can count the number of the day's runs you made on a single hand. We'd rather ride on a slower 2 seater chairlift and get 12+ runs in per day than 4 runs in on a heated seat 6 -8 pack where we waited in line for 30-60 mins to load and paid 4-6 times the price for a lift ticket. Hidden gem smaller resorts often have better terrain for all ability levels to learn on, while giving expert and even pro riders the wide open spaces to take our fastest waxes and absolutely barrel down wide open runs without fear of running into anyone. Spread out folks. There are 822 resorts to choose from.
